How to Make the Patio Look Nice for Summer

Aug 6, 2022

Outdoor space is one of the most desirable attributes for homes right now. A patio is an extension of your living room or kitchen, make yours work harder by exploring patio ideas that can turn a basic area into something really special. Creating an extension of your home into this garden space is a great way to make more of your home this Summer. Here are my top tips for styling your patio and creating your own haven at home for relaxing, entertaining and enjoying your garden.

How can I make my patio look nice?

Think about how you want to use the space; is it for dining outside? Working out? Entertaining? Or just for relaxing? Start with your patio furniture, is it fit for purpose? If you want a dining space for two then a compact bistro set could be ideal. If you want a larger entertaining space for family and friends then a large table and chairs that can be added to and moved around would be more appropriate.

Hanging seats and chairs can work well for smaller patios as they provide an instant zone for relaxing in, as well as not taking up any floor space, therefore creating the illusion of more space.

Outdoor furniture often looks tired if it is a few years old due to the British climate. Look to revive and rejuvenate with a lick of paint to smarten it up and even out tone or to add the vibrancy of colour.

Co-ordinate pots and planters with paint, you can co-ordinate (or clash if that's your style) quickly, economically and easily with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. It clings and covers terracotta, glazed, concrete and even plastic pots.

You can even paint your patio if it needs a facelift. You can add personality with pattern by stencilling the slabs and sealing with lacquer.

What should I put on my patio?

It's important to extend your home into the garden to create connectivity. Use all of the interior design tricks and style that you use inside your home. Zone the space and add comfort and colour using outdoor rugs. Hang outdoor mirrors on walls and fences to reflect light and plants and create the illusion of space.

Use plant stands and hanging planters to add height and move the eye around the space. Upcycle older pieces of furniture from indoors to out by painting and sealing against the elements using lacquer to create unique statement pieces that can be used as planters and stands.

Add scent; even on the smallest of patios a scent can transport your mind to far flung places. Citronella candles are great for repelling pesky insects as well as being the scent of Summer.

How do I make my patio feel cosy?

Decorative lights create a soft and atmospheric feel and add a little magic at dusk as well as adding design interest during the day.

Outdoor soft furnishings such as cushions, throws and outdoor rugs add texture and softness. Our range of eco friendly outdoor soft furnishings are made from recycled plastic bottles (although they're so soft your wouldn't know!) are weather resistant, machine washable, hypoallergenic and stain resistant.

How can I make my patio look special for entertaining?

Add in extra side tables when hosting to ensure that guests have plenty of places to place their drinks and belongings. Make the space inviting with plenty of soft furnishings to make it cosy and comfortable. Garden lighting is an easy way to improve how you use your garden and make it extra inviting so you can stay out and enjoy it longer. Add atmosphere with some solar lighting such as festoon light strings. If you're dining outside then go maximalist with your tablescaping; from pretty placemats, linen napkins, bud vases with pretty flowers and candles and hurricane lanterns for soft and scented lighting.
